About

I am Millicent Malinga, a Zimbabwean-born, Botswana-raised single mother to a seven-year-old, whom I had as a teenager. This early experience opened my eyes to the challenges faced by young girls and women lacking Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) knowledge. Before joining ALU, I volunteered as a peer mentor in multiple NGOs, laying the groundwork for my mission. At ALU, I founded the Boy Meets Girl club in 2023, now in partnership with AHF, providing free condoms and HIV test kits to the student community. Additionally, I serve as a Peer Counsellor on the Wellness Team and co-founded two startups, including LasBite, an AI-driven platform connecting neighbors to share uncooked food and buy excess food at discounted prices. In December 2022, LasBite won the Best Presenter award at the Circular Economy hackathon, and in 2023, we secured 2nd place at the SEGL Hackathon, both hosted by ALU. My overarching mission is to leverage technology for the delivery of SRH services and education in Africa, focusing on empowering women and girls by addressing barriers to quality care and information. Through innovative solutions, I aim to contribute to gender equality and the well-being of communities across the continent.

About

I'm Kevin Kayisire, co-founder of KAYKO with my brother Crepin. We started KAYKO to empower small businesses after witnessing our mother's catering business struggle without proper bookkeeping. Her inability to get a loan forced her to close down. From childhood, we were driven to help SMEs thrive. At ALU, we gained tech skills and saw firsthand the gaps small businesses faced. For my capstone, I created a digital solution to digitize operations for SMEs. Our passion led us to launch KAYKO the day we graduated. Through perseverance and grants, 500 SMEs now use KAYKO to track finances, improve tax compliance and access loans. Most are women-led. We aim to change the narrative and prove these businesses are enterprising and reliable. By creating credit scores, we'll help them access financial services. Our journey shows the resilience of African entrepreneurs. I'm proud KAYKO empowers small businesses to formalize and grow.

I am Ian Omung'a, raised in a modest one-bedroom flat in Huruma, Nairobi. My childhood was shaped by my stay-at-home mother and librarian father. However, the 2008 Post-Election Violence disrupted our lives, displacing us to Eldoret. Despite upheavals, my academic excellence earned a Merit Scholarship to Alliance High School. At the African Leadership College, I embarked on a transformative journey as a Mastercard Foundation Scholar. Fueled by a passion for innovation, I founded Vectorgram, a healthtech startup providing AI-powered breast cancer diagnosis tools for under-resourced Kenyan hospitals. About

I am Deborah, a senior student at the African Leadership University, currently pursuing a degree in environmental policy with a strong focus on sustainable development goals. Growing up as the sixth born in a family of eight siblings in Kigali, Rwanda, I have always been passionate about advocating for the voices of marginalized and historically underrepresented communities. This commitment led me to serve as an International youth delegate for COP28, a member of the European Union youth sounding board, and an I ACT peer trainer involved in Italy and IRENA Action for Climate Toolkit. As the co-founder of the Power Circle, a venture dedicated to eliminating food waste using black soldier fly insects, we secured the ALU circular economy fund to bring this innovative project to life. My global engagements include participating in the Unleash Innovation Lab in India and COP27 in Egypt, where our team devised a solar-powered solution providing electricity and training to internally displaced youth in Bangladesh affected by climate disasters. This initiative received seed funding from Chimonics and Infosys to materialize. Furthermore, as a Youngo Loss and Damage member at COP27, our collaborative efforts resulted in drafting a policy document on loss and damage funding for developing countries, SIDs, and LDC, culminating in a historic deal at COP27 to establish the loss and damage fund. My overarching mission remains to amplify the voices of the marginalized and historically underrepresented, contributing to the realization of a just and inclusive world for all.

About

Growing up in the tranquil district of Nyanza, southern Rwanda, as the eldest in my middle-class family of six, I bore witness to the debilitating impact of malnutrition, especially in rural communities. This experience fueled my determination to make a difference. As my family could only meet our basic needs, funding a university education became my responsibility. I faced hurdles, including the financial strain of English tests, hindering my pursuit of a scholarship. Uncertain about my future after high school, my passion for combating malnutrition persisted. Fast forward to today, I'm a third-year student, navigating obstacles and determined to support my family, particularly as my parents approach retirement. Despite initial challenges, I founded Nusufo, an innovative venture striving to cultivate and sell spirulina, a potent nutritional supplement. While funding remains a hurdle, conversations with potential investors are underway, and proposals have been submitted. Nusufo's buzz in the community reflects the curiosity surrounding its potential impact. With a mission to eliminate malnutrition by offering affordable and organic spirulina, Nusufo aligns with SDGs such as zero hunger, good health, and well-being, and partnership for the goals. My goal is to bring 100% organic spirulina, in both powder and tablet forms, addressing malnutrition challenges for various demographics in Rwanda, including children, adolescents, women, and those with chronic diseases.
